This Chapter is ultimately the down fall of Gatsby's life long dream of being with Daisy. His whole life shuts down from the parties, to his servants, to dead friends, Gatsby is losing everything.
Gatsby seems to be giving away everything he has. He stops throwing parties and changes out his servants. Why do you think he did this? Did he do it for Daisy? And do you think he is not going to be as happy without these things.
To answer the inner circles question I believed he called off the parties because he didnt need them anymore. Before he used the parties to just get Daisy involved in him and come and see him and have her be back in her life. The reason he doesnt need it anymore is because he basically has her now.
I think Daisy did not care too much about Toms' affiar with the other woman because she said she never loved him so then why would she care if she never loved him.
What do you think about them driving through the valley of ashes and going under the blue eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg does that represent? And why did Daisy choose Gatsby over Tom?
Conner, he is upset and know that he cant have wat he want. He stops throwing the party's because they were just for attracting Daisy to his house. The servents were odd. He fired them all and then replaced them with servent connected to the Wolfound guy.
Tom’s suspicions about Gatsby’s criminal activity are confirmed in this chapter. Tom then makes this information public in an attempt to disgrace Gatsby. Why did Tom choose to disgrace Gatsby in the way he does?
Lee, Who cares if you are first. But I do agree with you, he seems to be losing touch with his rebel side, he gives everuthing away and has to start from brand new. Gatsby truly does love her.
Connor, The servants don't matter and he even said that it was cause he didn't want them to start gossip. so honestly I feel like with him having new servants and not having parties won't effect his over all happieness 'cause the parties were to lure Daisy in but now that he feels like he's closer to her he won't be throwing them as much.
On page 120 Gatsby says that Daisy's voice sounds like money. I think that this shows what Fitzgerald thought of the culture at this time. He thinks that everybody is materialistic and only really cares about money. Fitzgerald is almost saying that Gatsby only really loves Daisy because she provides the same pleasure as money.
Even after being Daisy's first love Gatsby is still left behind for Tom. Tom says it was because of their long and interesting history, I find it hard to believe that Daisy is staying with Tom because of history, she seems more involved with money.
Connor- I think that he does that because he has reached his goal of getting Daisy's love and getting her to tell Tom that she doesn't love him. I don't think that he did it for her because his goal was to get her to come over to his house and because he already has her over then he doesn't need to be flashy for her. I think he is happy with Daisy because his goal was to get her and he does.
After reading this I feel like Gatsby is starting to leave his life he made in the way of the servants and everything and also changing his life. What is the reason for all of this.
Gatsby fires all of his servants because he didn't want them to gossip, do you think there is another reason for this? Also at lunch Daisy and Gatsby kiss, why do Jordan and Nick not act suprise? This shows the morals of this time and how it is acceptable to cheat. It brings it back to Fitzgerald's main theme of the book which is the unhealthy lives and relationships of wealthy people.
Connor. I think that Gatsby did it for Daisy for sure because now that he has what he wants he doesnt need to throw parties anymore. He only threw them to get Daisy's attention. Plus Gatsby never really participated in his parties so it seems like he didnt even care about them. So I think that Gatsby will still be happy because he hasn't really lost anything and he has gained Daisy
i agree with nate because now that Gatsby is close with Daisy he doesnt need the whole lifestyle he lead to try and impress her anymore so he stops having parties
In this chapter Tom swiches roles. When Daisy's infedelity come to light, Tom plays the role of heartbroken victim. This is funny because of how hipicritical it is. He is fine with his own infatdlity but when comes to his wife, it can't happen.
on page 123 while Tom is at Wilson's garage, he quotes about wilson, "In the sunlight, his face was green." what do you think this symbolizes? I did some research and found that green means soothing relaxing, and symbolizes hope. How does this reflect Wilson?
This chapter I felt was very important because Daisy, Aside from kissing Nick in the previous chapter, denied the oppertunity to drive with Tom to the town and after Tom left she kissed Gatsby. This part was significant to me because Tom told her to drive to town with him and she said no and turned around and held Gatsby's arm stating that "I'm going with Gatsby" I believe this part is fairly significant because it is revealing a new side of Daisy favoring Gatsby.
I diagree with the discussers, Daisy is not totally obssseed with only herself, her color fitzgerald uses with Daisy is white wich symbolizes honorable, unblemished, and morally.
Conner- I think he is doing all of this for Daisy. His parties were just to lure Daisy to him but now since he is on the fringe or maybe getting Daisy he is going to stop throwing parties. If Gatsby Doesn't get Daisy his life will be over and he will have nothing more to live for.
I think the most important event of chapter 7 was the open confrontation between Tom and Gatsby, this made it clear to all characters that these two do not like each other, and im sure this dislike will affect the events of the final two chapters.
Jacob Tom chose to disgrace him this way for 2 reasons, he wants Daisy to think that he is a bad person that she can not be with and also he wants people the think of him as bad so if people see Daisy and Gatsby together then they will think it is wrong.
Andy- I agree as well I think he loves her, but I think he more loves the fact that he has control over her, as he shows when he demands that Daisy tell Tom that she never loved him.
With what Jurim was saying about Gatsby fading out now, I think Gatsby will become more involved with his shady business instead of disappearing. I think he will try at his shady side even more with Daisy not interested.
The confrontation between Tom and Gatsby is very important because it seems like there has been a hate brewingbetween the two men over Daisy and who Daisy will end up with, the two are finally clashing.
Lee, I agree with you that it has more to do with money. It might even have something to do with her kid and she doesn't want her kid to have a childhood of uncertainty and wants her kid to have what she had and Tom is safer than Gatsby. But like she says she loves them both but does she really or does she both of their piles of money.
Brooke, I think that he felt that he was not good enough for their skill level. So I think he down graded because his reputatuion went down hill because he stopped throwing these massive parties.
Mollyb2012 I believe Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Thinking he is safe in his home and in the valley of the ashes. Maybe foreshadowing something that happens with Wilson later on in the book that isn't safe or harmful
Nate, this confirntation also proved another thing. At the beginig Daisy was is love with Gatsby, this was show all before this point. Over the confrintation Daisy starts to side with Tom and is leaving Gatsby in the dust. This is a proving ground that leads to the end of the chapter when Gatsby finaly looses Daisy.
With Daisy, she has both Tom and Gatsby to chose from. I feel like she wants to chose Gatsby because of there past but it can never be like that again. It also holds her back to be with Gatsby because she has a life now with Tom and a child and had basically forgotten about Gatsby. In the end I feel like she will never leave Tom
Brett I disagree that Daisy never cared about Tom's affairs because she never loved him. On page 133 Daisy says "Even alone I can't say I never loved Tom" I think that she does love Tom and was partially trying to get back at him with Gatsby. I think that the reason Daisy is in such a mess is because she is torn between loving two men.
In chapter 7 Gatsby admits that he only went to Oxford for 5 months. do you think this is true or do you still think he is lynig? I think that Gatsby is still lying because he doesnt want to admit to Tom that he didnt go to Oxford.
Connor-I agree with you but I think that Tom is truly petty, just like when he finds out about Daisy’s affair, he chooses to become an outraged victim, even though he had no moral conflicts with affairs.
With what the inner circle is talking about, I think that Daisy does care about her child but loves Gatsby more. She stays distant but is still there. And does the Green car show the envy?
I was surprised when Tom shares his knowledge of Gatsby's illegal activities in front of everyone to disgrace him. Tom is trying to bring down Gatsby in front of everyone.
Nate- I believe he did go to Oxford 5 months because it was related to the war, he just admitted the full truth so he could look better in front of Daisy and try to make Tom look like a fool.
On another note, on page 119 Daisy says to Gatsby, "You look ike the advertisement of the man". I think this man is Uncle Sam because it represents the American Dream. The irony is that Uncle Sam achieved the American Dream and Gatsby cannot. He dreams of getting the girl he wants, all of the money in the world, the perfect job, and an amazing life but he is still missing some of those aspects.
Do you think that Tom would do what Gatsby did if he was in the car when Daisy hit Myrtle? Because i don't think he would because even though he said he loves her, he still cheated on her and it would be easy for him to find another girl like Daisy, that will only love him for his money.
Why do you think Daisy kissed Nick at the party and before heading to the town kissed Gatsby? Do you think Daisy kissing Nick will blow up in her face when/if Gatsby finds out?
I believe that she kissed Nick because deep down inside Daisy has a crazy lust for money and fame but also has a deep desire for love from her partner. That may be the reason why she is having such a difficult time choosing the right person to be with between Gatsby and Tom. I believe the kiss will blow up in her face because Gatsby will find out and reveal a deep secret about their past together.
Nate- I knew this was going to happen between Gatsby and Tom. Now that he has found out there love for eachother, Tom is going to want to get Gatsby away from Daisy. Also now that Tom has lost his mistress he is going to want to keep Daisy for himself more than ever.
Nate- i think Daisy was leading Gatsby on to gain all the benefits from Gatsbys money and use him for his fortune but never actually fell in love with Gatsby
Nate I believe that Wilson will be upset with with Gatsby and his past or doing something to Mrs. Wilson and for revenge Wilson will come after Gatsby and kill him in the pool.
Hunter- I don't exactly understand why green would mean safety, and that contradicts Wilson. Wilson says that he wants to leave the Valley of Ashes. Thats why he is taking Tom's car. So if it is about safety in his home, then why is he desperate to leave. I think Wilson being shown as green is showing that he has found a hope somewhere else. The ashes where he lives symbolizes his clouded life. But he is getting out of the waste land and therefor appears hopeful.
Why did Daisy go on a crazy killing phase? she killed Myrtle, and showed no mremorse. Gatsby soon gives a cover up story because he was trying to show how much he loved her, or did he sacrifise himself and why?
EmilyK2012- I agree with you that Daisy is torn between 2 men, but how do you think Daisy feels about Gatsby demanding that she tell Tom that she never loved him? Gatsby is clearly trying to win this battle between the 2 men, do you think Daisy will allow Gatsby to control her as he is trying to do now?
Nate- I think that he did go to Oxford for some time, it makes since because of the armistice thing that he said, but his whole "old sport" thing that he says makes it seem that he lived there for a longer time span, unless he read somewhere that every english person talks like that. So he fakes like he lived there.
I believe the reason why they say that Daisy has a mouth full of money, is because that the only thing that comes out of her mouth is lies just so she can obtain more money. I believe that there is a major line between people who own old money and people who own new money. I believe Daisy, although has old money, has a thirst for the feeling of obtaining new money and that feeling of having money constantly pouring in like Gatsby and his money and buisness.
Nate I think he did go to Oxford for the 5 months. I don't think he would lie about that because it would just be another lie that would be pointless, on the other hand it very well could have been a lie because we still don't know if he was in the war for sure.
Nate, it is all about past vs. future. Gatsby is her love from the past. He wants it to go to the way it had benn back before the war. But Daisy knows that it is the future that counts. She is seang that Gatsby is a sunken boat but that Tom is where her best possible future lying with Tom.
What katie was talking about in the inner circle about Gatsby being that kind of stand up guy to take the fall for the murder, I believe that Gatsby can just wave his little card again and get away with it.
I agree with Lee, remeber back when they drove through the valley of ashes and the police man pulled Gatsby over he got off when he showed the officer that paper, Gatsby knows people that can help him and if not Gatsby is so rich Diasy and himself can flee or pay people off. Gatsby knows he that daisy and himself wont pay for it.
I disagree with her falling in love with the military stature. This is because falling in love with someone in the military is difficult to do while still being strong and love the person while the man is not with her. I feel she then fell in love with Tom because he was there with the money and even though he cheats on her she still stayed with him for the security of her life not changing then
i think that Daisy is a extremely self-centered person, who doesnt care about Gatsby, tom, or her daughter, and i dont see how all these guys are attracted to her.
This section of the book directly relates to Fitzgerald's life because Fitzgerald had the rich awesome life at first. But then he started to become less wealthy and well known. This is just like whats happening to Gatsby, he is starting to lose his reputation. Do you think Gatsby will go down the same road as Fitzgerald went down?
I agree with lee, he has already gotten away with multiple things by just showing the card, and if that doesn't work I feel like he knows people everywhere and he could get away no matter what.
Daisy's voice is full of money. This brings back the repetitive color of green. Green represents that she kept to her morals throughout the entire book, which were simply to get rich. When Gatsby tells Tom that Daisy has never loved him, Daisy is stuck in the middle of the two. She is in love with both of them and eventually she will need to make a choice of the two. It is harder to end her life now and go with Gatsby than to stay with Tom. She will try to keep both of them as long as possible.
On page 140 the color blue is associated with Tom Bucannan, because he car is blue. Blue seems like a very cold color. I think that this is indicating that tom is either a cold person or that he is going to cause something bad to happen.
While reading this chapter I knowticed that Tom became darker and more mysterious and as he changed his attitude, so did Daisy. Almost as if there personalities are connected to each other and display a greater meaning. I believe the greater meaning is that Tom is made to be with Daisy because of their connections with eachother and the connection Daisy has with Gatsby is only a lust for money love.
Do you think Gatsby had a cover up story for Daisy because he loved her or becuase he didnt want to be involved especially with his past or have her involved anymore about it
Daisy seems to be in a good situation because she can choose between Tom and Gatsby, they will throw there money away for her. So do you think Daisy likes her situation right now or is she tired of it and just wants to stay with Tom?
I dont think that any of the people in this rich society are true friends to one another, all the character seem to use each other for their own personal motives.
Lee, I agree with you, maybe Gatsby has some connections with the law enforcement because of his bootlegger connections. I read that they usually buy some cops to help them and that's why he feels like he will get a lesser sentence for an accident than Daisy who knew that Tom had a mistress and just happened to kill that mistress
How does Nick forget it is his own birthday? What does this represent? What is the importance of Wilson and the girl that got killed? Also, it always brings up Gatsby's pink suit he wears, what does this represent?
I agree with the discussers that Gatsby does not care about Nick. I think that now Gatsby got Daisy by using Nick he is just using Nick as a buffer between Gatsby and Tom, Nick is friends with Tom so Gatsby can use that to possibly help protect himself and Daisy as well as Gatsby goals.
Nate, love is a weird thing. Daisy is deffently self centered. All she really cares about is her self. Gatsby and Tom are in love with her and want her. But they also could be in love with the idea of what they want Daisy to be to them. Also if she's supper hot they might stay with her for that.
Nate I completely agree, but with Nick and Gatsby I feel like they sort of have a friendship because nick didn't use Gatsby very often but they got together an did things. The other thing is that neither of them knew many people so they had things in common.
Emily I agree blue is typically a darker color that is associated with bad things, but don't ytou think that it could also symbolize how he's always unhappy in all of this like "he's got the blues" in a way
I believe that Nick used Gatsby to find out more about him. From the beginning of the story Nick seems to be favoring more and more towards Gatsby and his way of life, even though he denied the position that Gatsby offered him.
With the inner circle im not sure if he used Gatsby. I believe in the situation of parties he used Gatsby but then if you think about him turning down Gatsby for the work he didnt want to use him there so there must be a reason for going to all the parties
Brooke- I think that Nick forgot his birthday because he has been partying and living it up and im betting that he just feels like all the days are blended so he looses track of time. Do you think all the characters in the book are like this?
Mollyb -He might want to leave from the valley of ashes but he feels like he is in a safe environment he isn't in the west egg or east egg so he isn't getting mixed up with the crowed doing all these crazy things and nothing much happens in the valley of the ashes only tom stopping by and people driving by so he is in a safe environment.
Gatsby takes the blame for Daisy killing Myrtle, do you think that Daisy will love him in return for taking the blame, or is this just his hopeful, unrealistic expectations? Even though he has lost his love, does he still think that he can achieve it, if so why?
The end of this chapter Gatsby is left alone in the darkness under the moon, what does this moon represent? My prediction of the rest of the book is that Gatsby is going to get caught for his murder and instead of going to jail he is going to run away. Since that is so much stress on Daisy I don't think she will go with him. She will realize that he is too much pain than it's worth. Then, Gatsby will end alone and on the run.
Brooke- I think Nick is so worried about helping out Gatbsy that he hasn't really done anything for himself. Nick wishes he could not help out Gatsby but helping him out brings him benefits like money and parties. Hopefully there will be something good out of the situation and Nick will benefit from helping Gatsby out.
Nate, everyone puts on masks. Not just the rich. I think that some of the rich are friends but they are greedy. They all always looking for a way to profet of their friend that will get them the fatherst in their life. But the same thing can be said for less economicly supirior peopls.
Daisy must represent something more then just a self centered person. She obviously cares about her daughter because she describes her as "blessed". Daisy reflects the color white. White projects purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. Doctors wear white coats, brides traditionally wear white gowns, and a white picket fence surrounds a safe and happy home. But how is Daisy pure when she killed Myrtle? Also she is cheating on Tom, but there is something pure about it. Her love for him was at first portrayed as pure but now she is stuck.
I think that every time the eyes are mentioned it is forshadowing something that, last time we saw them was when Nick began to learn about Gatsbys business with Wolfsheim and Nick learns of Gatsbys past. Now the eyes forshadowed everyting that took place in the hotel room with gatsby, tom and diasy and the car accident.
Why did Gatsby call off all of his parties? - I think that Gatsby’s parties were to lure daisy in. During the last party, Daisy didn’t have a good time. Now that Tom attends Gatsby’s party she’s not going to have a good time. To prevent himself from feeling like a failure, and to keep Daisy happy he celled off all of the parties.
Why is daisy having a hard time picking in between Gatsby and Tom? -Gatsby is of the new money and Daisy might think that it would be easier for him to lose his money. But, she remembers her past love with him five years ago and how wonderful it was and how devoted to her Gatsby seems to be. On the other side, Tom is from the old rich and his ability to keep his money is more stable. But, she sees that he has been cheating on her and that she can’t fully rely on him.
What does Gatsby mean when he refers to Daisy having a “voice full of money”? - He sees that Daisy’s main goal is to get money and to live in wealth. This is why he worked so hard to get everything that he owns now. Because Daisy is only impressed with material things and the money that buys them.
Why do you think that Gatsby sacrificed himself for Daisy’s sake? -I think he sacrificed himself because he is truly devoted to Daisy and will do anything to keep his love with Daisy. He has been in pain for five years and he isn’t willing to go back to how things were before they met again.
What does the heat represent? -I think it foreshadowed the conflict between Tom, Gatsby, and Daisy. It shows how the one fight is what unravels their relationship together. It kind of seems like a boiling point and the point were everything isn’t the same anymore.
In chapter 7 Gatsby called off all his parties most likely because the sole purpose of them was to lure Daisy in. He wanted her to come in and see how much he changed for her and he wanted to recreate their past love. After finding Daisy and trying his best to show her the sacrafices he made for her there was no use for the parties anymore. If they weren't going to make a difference in Daisy opinion then he had no motivation for the parties despite the enjoyment they brought to others. What was mysterious was that he hired new servants who had connections to Wolfshiem. Gatsby had gotten what he wanted, to see Daisy again but why had he been so concerned about rumors his servants would spread? Next when the group discovers that Wilson knows of Myrtle's infidelity Nick compares it to the situation that Tom is in. Wilson knows but is unaware of the full detail. (He doesn't know it is Tom) and Tom has preconcieved the feellings between Daisy and Gatsby so he insisted on the group staying together as opposed to Gatsby and Daisy going to the city by themselves. Why was it significant that Nick compared Tom and Wilson under the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckelberg? Do these straznge eyes help Nick understand? After the group gets to the hotel Tom starts an argument with Gatsby over Daisy. Daisy had been so drawn to Gatsby earlier in the day but throughout the course of the fight she leans more towards Toms side than Gatsby. Tom tries to make Gatsby think he can't hurt him or their relationship, he thinks Gatsby doesn't understand what him and Daisy have together. On the way back Nick, Jordan, and Tom discover that Myrtle had been hit by a car going to New York. Nick assumes that it was Gatsby and Daisy driving back to New York and that Gatsby hit her. However, later that night Gatsby confesses to Nick that Daisy was driving but Gatsby is willing to take the blame for her. Did Daisy hit Myrtle on purpose because she knew that she was Tom's lover? Why had they not gotten out and faced the concequences immediatly after Myrtle was hit? After Nick goes to check on Daisy he finds her and Tom eating and talking. Did she confess to Tom what she had done? Was it all for Vengance? How was she so comfortable with herself after she knew she had murdered someone? What will happen to Gatsby and Daisy now? Were they in the killing together or was it truly an accident? Can the incident bring them closer together because they both know the truth, or, will it tear them apart?
Jacob, I think that Daisy won't love him and is a pond for her to force Tom to use more of his money to make her happy. So that she will stay with him because she loves spending money for herself.
Jacob to answer your question I think that Daisy is a little ticked off that Gatsby is trying to force her to say she never loved Tom. On page 132 She says she never loved Tom but she turns to Gatsby and says "are you happy". I think that Gatsby is trying to get Daisy to say this because he wants to prove that things haven't changed he wants things to be just the way they were five years ago.
So i realized I made a mistake in my previous blogging. When I referenced the quote on page 123 about Wilson's face appearing green, I described him as having hope but after doing further research i found that green means both Hope and envy! ( two complete opposites) Envy makes much more sense in this passage. Obviously Wilson is jealous because Myrtle has been cheating on him with Tom. He wants to get his wife away from the valley of ashes so she will part with her secret lover (aka Tom).
1. Will Daisy ever leave Tom for Gatsby? - Even though we can clearly see that Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby, I don't see her ever leaving Tom to be with him. Tom is from old money while Gatsby has made his fortune through illegal business ventures. Even though Tom isn't as well known as Gatsby, no one ever has to question about where is money came from like they have to with Gatsby. Daisy is also looking for the complete package lifestyle which Tom has had no trouble providing. 2. Why doesn't Gatsby or Daisy return to Wilson's after killing Myrtle? -This book is filled with characters who care about nothing besides themselves, this lack of responsibility and guilt show how selfish they can be. Why would Daisy go back? She has this perfect life set up and god forrbid that should be ruined just because she took the life of someone else. Gatsby is even willing to take the blame for the accident which led me to believe that Daisy must have just assumed he would do that for her. "Was Daisy driving?" "Yes," he said after a moment, "but of course I'll say I was." (pg 143) 3. Why does Gatsby stop having his parties? -Simple, he got what he was looking for, Daisy. Gatsby only threw these lavish parties because he was hoping that one night Daisy would come and he could have the love of his life back. Jordan even tells Nick that the purpose for the parties was so that Gatsby might run into someone who knew Daisy and he'd be able to find her through them. Once he found Jordan and Nick the parties began to lack their importance and only served as a way for Daisy to hear about Gatsby. 4. What does the heat in this chapter represent? - I think the reason Fitzgerald made the day so hot in this chapter as a way to foreshadow the coming events. I see the heat as the boiling point of the book, that the events in this chapter will ignite all the problems in the story and cause the characters to lose control. 5. Is Daisy only looking for money? -It is important to keep in mind that during this time period it wasn't common for a woman to be working and able to provide for herself, so of course Daisy will look for someone with money. Like Tom, she too is from old money and doesn't know any different. Daisy was given a fortunate life of riches and glamour so it was always her mission to find a man that could continue to provide this life. Although she loves both Tom and Gatsby she thinks more about which one can give her the best life possible, and that's Tom.
This Chapter is ultimately the down fall of Gatsby's life long dream of being with Daisy. His whole life shuts down from the parties, to his servants, to dead friends, Gatsby is losing everything.

ReplyDeleteConner- I think he is doing all of this for Daisy. His parties were just to lure Daisy to him but now since he is on the fringe or maybe getting Daisy he is going to stop throwing parties. If Gatsby Doesn't get Daisy his life will be over and he will have nothing more to live for.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important event of chapter 7 was the open confrontation between Tom and Gatsby, this made it clear to all characters that these two do not like each other, and im sure this dislike will affect the events of the final two chapters.
ReplyDeleteJacob
ReplyDeleteTom chose to disgrace him this way for 2 reasons, he wants Daisy to think that he is a bad person that she can not be with and also he wants people the think of him as bad so if people see Daisy and Gatsby together then they will think it is wrong.
Andy- I agree as well I think he loves her, but I think he more loves the fact that he has control over her, as he shows when he demands that Daisy tell Tom that she never loved him.
ReplyDeleteWith what Jurim was saying about Gatsby fading out now, I think Gatsby will become more involved with his shady business instead of disappearing. I think he will try at his shady side even more with Daisy not interested.
ReplyDeleteThe confrontation between Tom and Gatsby is very important because it seems like there has been a hate brewingbetween the two men over Daisy and who Daisy will end up with, the two are finally clashing.
ReplyDeleteLee, I agree with you that it has more to do with money. It might even have something to do with her kid and she doesn't want her kid to have a childhood of uncertainty and wants her kid to have what she had and Tom is safer than Gatsby. But like she says she loves them both but does she really or does she both of their piles of money.
ReplyDeleteBrooke, I think that he felt that he was not good enough for their skill level. So I think he down graded because his reputatuion went down hill because he stopped throwing these massive parties.
ReplyDeleteThroughout this Chapter they say hot way too many times is this a way that Fitzgerald is showing us the future tension?
ReplyDeleteMollyb2012
ReplyDeleteI believe Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Thinking he is safe in his home and in the valley of the ashes. Maybe foreshadowing something that happens with Wilson later on in the book that isn't safe or harmful
Nate,
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of events are you predicting?
I think Tom will end up killing Gatsby
Nate, this confirntation also proved another thing. At the beginig Daisy was is love with Gatsby, this was show all before this point. Over the confrintation Daisy starts to side
ReplyDeletewith Tom and is leaving Gatsby in the dust.
ReplyDeleteBrett I disagree that Daisy never cared about Tom's affairs because she never loved him. On page 133 Daisy says "Even alone I can't say I never loved Tom" I think that she does love Tom and was partially trying to get back at him with Gatsby. I think that the reason Daisy is in such a mess is because she is torn between loving two men.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 7 Gatsby admits that he only went to Oxford for 5 months. do you think this is true or do you still think he is lynig?
ReplyDeleteI think that Gatsby is still lying because he doesnt want to admit to Tom that he didnt go to Oxford.
Connor-I agree with you but I think that Tom is truly petty, just like when he finds out about Daisy’s affair, he chooses to become an outraged victim, even though he had no moral conflicts with affairs.
ReplyDeleteWith what the inner circle is talking about, I think that Daisy does care about her child but loves Gatsby more. She stays distant but is still there. And does the Green car show the envy?
ReplyDeleteI was surprised when Tom shares his knowledge of Gatsby's illegal activities in front of everyone to disgrace him. Tom is trying to bring down Gatsby in front of everyone.
ReplyDeleteNate- I believe he did go to Oxford 5 months because it was related to the war, he just admitted the full truth so he could look better in front of Daisy and try to make Tom look like a fool.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, on page 119 Daisy says to Gatsby, "You look ike the advertisement of the man". I think this man is Uncle Sam because it represents the American Dream. The irony is that Uncle Sam achieved the American Dream and Gatsby cannot. He dreams of getting the girl he wants, all of the money in the world, the perfect job, and an amazing life but he is still missing some of those aspects.
ReplyDeleteCortez- I agree that Daisy is siding with Tom over gatsby, so why do you think she was leading Gatsby on in the first place?
ReplyDeleteDo you think that Tom would do what Gatsby did if he was in the car when Daisy hit Myrtle?
ReplyDeleteBecause i don't think he would because even though he said he loves her, he still cheated on her and it would be easy for him to find another girl like Daisy, that will only love him for his money.
Why do you think Daisy kissed Nick at the party and before heading to the town kissed Gatsby? Do you think Daisy kissing Nick will blow up in her face when/if Gatsby finds out?
ReplyDeleteI believe that she kissed Nick because deep down inside Daisy has a crazy lust for money and fame but also has a deep desire for love from her partner.
ReplyDeleteNate- i think Daisy was leading Gatsby on to gain all the benefits from Gatsbys money and use him for his fortune but never actually fell in love with Gatsby
ReplyDeleteNate
ReplyDeleteI believe that Wilson will be upset with with Gatsby and his past or doing something to Mrs. Wilson and for revenge Wilson will come after Gatsby and kill him in the pool.
Hunter-
ReplyDeleteI don't exactly understand why green would mean safety, and that contradicts Wilson.
The reason that Daisy left Gatsby was money, at least that was one of the reasons, so money is something important for Daisy.
ReplyDeleteWhy did Daisy go on a crazy killing phase? she killed Myrtle, and showed no mremorse. Gatsby soon gives a cover up story because he was trying to show how much he loved her, or did he sacrifise himself and why?
ReplyDeleteEmilyK2012- I agree with you that Daisy is torn between 2 men, but how do you think Daisy feels about Gatsby demanding that she tell Tom that she never loved him? Gatsby is clearly trying to win this battle between the 2 men, do you think Daisy will allow Gatsby to control her as he is trying to do now?
ReplyDeleteNate- I think that he did go to Oxford for some time, it makes since because of the armistice thing that he said, but his whole "old sport" thing that he says makes it seem that he lived there for a longer time span, unless he read somewhere that every english person talks like that. So he fakes like he lived there.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reason why they say that Daisy has a mouth full of money, is because that the only thing that comes out of her mouth is lies just so she can obtain more money. I believe that there is a major line between people who own old money and people who own new money. I believe Daisy, although has old money, has a thirst for the feeling of obtaining new money and that feeling of having money constantly pouring in like Gatsby and his money and buisness.
ReplyDeleteNate
ReplyDeleteI think he did go to Oxford for the 5 months.
ReplyDeleteNate, I think that it's not only to hide it from Tom but to also impress Daisy we already said that that's his prime motive when he does anything.
ReplyDeleteWhat katie was talking about in the inner circle about Gatsby being that kind of stand up guy to take the fall for the murder, I believe that Gatsby can just wave his little card again and get away with it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lee, remeber back when they drove through the valley of ashes and the police man pulled Gatsby over he got off when he showed the officer that paper, Gatsby knows people that can help him and if not Gatsby is so rich Diasy and himself can flee or pay people off. Gatsby knows he that daisy and himself wont pay for it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with her falling in love with the military stature. This is because falling in love with someone in the military is difficult to do while still being strong and love the person while the man is not with her. I feel she then fell in love with Tom because he was there with the money and even though he cheats on her she still stayed with him for the security of her life not changing then
ReplyDeletei think that Daisy is a extremely self-centered person, who doesnt care about Gatsby, tom, or her daughter, and i dont see how all these guys are attracted to her.
ReplyDeleteI think the only tihng Daisy cares about is what is best for her, as long as she has a rich man that can suport her she isnt as concerned with love
ReplyDeleteThis section of the book directly relates to Fitzgerald's life because Fitzgerald had the rich awesome life at first. But then he started to become less wealthy and well known. This is just like whats happening to Gatsby, he is starting to lose his reputation. Do you think Gatsby will go down the same road as Fitzgerald went down?
ReplyDeleteI agree with lee, he has already gotten away with multiple things by just showing the card, and if that doesn't work I feel like he knows people everywhere and he could get away no matter what.
ReplyDeleteDaisy's voice is full of money.
ReplyDeleteOn page 140 the color blue is associated with Tom Bucannan, because he car is blue. Blue seems like a very cold color. I think that this is indicating that tom is either a cold person or that he is going to cause something bad to happen.
ReplyDeleteCortez, How is she seeing Gatsby as a sunken boat? How does she react to the situation at this time?
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this chapter I knowticed that Tom became darker and more mysterious and as he changed his attitude, so did Daisy. Almost as if there personalities are connected to each other and display a greater meaning. I believe the greater meaning is that Tom is made to be with Daisy because of their connections with eachother and the connection Daisy has with Gatsby is only a lust for money love.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Gatsby had a cover up story for Daisy because he loved her or becuase he didnt want to be involved especially with his past or have her involved anymore about it
ReplyDeleteDaisy seems to be in a good situation because she can choose between Tom and Gatsby, they will throw there money away for her. So do you think Daisy likes her situation right now or is she tired of it and just wants to stay with Tom?
ReplyDeleteI dont think that any of the people in this rich society are true friends to one another, all the character seem to use each other for their own personal motives.
ReplyDeleteLee, I agree with you, maybe Gatsby has some connections with the law enforcement because of his bootlegger connections. I read that they usually buy some cops to help them and that's why he feels like he will get a lesser sentence for an accident than Daisy who knew that Tom had a mistress and just happened to kill that mistress
ReplyDeleteHow does Nick forget it is his own birthday? What does this represent? What is the importance of Wilson and the girl that got killed? Also, it always brings up Gatsby's pink suit he wears, what does this represent?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the discussers that Gatsby does not care about Nick. I think that now Gatsby got Daisy by using Nick he is just using Nick as a buffer between Gatsby and Tom, Nick is friends with Tom so Gatsby can use that to possibly help protect himself and Daisy as well as Gatsby goals.
ReplyDeleteNate, love is a weird thing. Daisy is deffently self centered. All she really cares about is her self. Gatsby and Tom are in love with her and want her. But they also could be in love with the idea of what they want Daisy to be to them. Also if she's supper hot they might stay with her for that.
ReplyDeleteNate
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, but with Nick and Gatsby I feel like they sort of have a friendship because nick didn't use Gatsby very often but they got together an did things. The other thing is that neither of them knew many people so they had things in common.
Emily I agree blue is typically a darker color that is associated with bad things, but don't ytou think that it could also symbolize how he's always unhappy in all of this like "he's got the blues" in a way
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nick used Gatsby to find out more about him. From the beginning of the story Nick seems to be favoring more and more towards Gatsby and his way of life, even though he denied the position that Gatsby offered him.
ReplyDeleteWith the inner circle im not sure if he used Gatsby. I believe in the situation of parties he used Gatsby but then if you think about him turning down Gatsby for the work he didnt want to use him there so there must be a reason for going to all the parties
ReplyDeleteBrooke-
ReplyDeleteI think that Nick forgot his birthday because he has been partying and living it up and im betting that he just feels like all the days are blended so he looses track of time. Do you think all the characters in the book are like this?
Mollyb
ReplyDelete-He might want to leave from the valley of ashes but he feels like he is in a safe environment he isn't in the west egg or east egg so he isn't getting mixed up with the crowed doing all these crazy things and nothing much happens in the valley of the ashes only tom stopping by and people driving by so he is in a safe environment.
Gatsby takes the blame for Daisy killing Myrtle, do you think that Daisy will love him in return for taking the blame, or is this just his hopeful, unrealistic expectations? Even though he has lost his love, does he still think that he can achieve it, if so why?
ReplyDeleteThe end of this chapter Gatsby is left alone in the darkness under the moon, what does this moon represent? My prediction of the rest of the book is that Gatsby is going to get caught for his murder and instead of going to jail he is going to run away. Since that is so much stress on Daisy I don't think she will go with him. She will realize that he is too much pain than it's worth. Then, Gatsby will end alone and on the run.
ReplyDeleteBrooke- I think Nick is so worried about helping out Gatbsy that he hasn't really done anything for himself. Nick wishes he could not help out Gatsby but helping him out brings him benefits like money and parties. Hopefully there will be something good out of the situation and Nick will benefit from helping Gatsby out.
ReplyDeleteNate, everyone puts on masks. Not just the rich. I think that some of the rich are friends but they are greedy. They all always looking for a way to profet of their friend that will get them the fatherst in their life. But the same thing can be said for less economicly supirior peopls.
ReplyDeleteDaisy must represent something more then just a self centered person.
ReplyDeleteI think that every time the eyes are mentioned it is forshadowing something that, last time we saw them was when Nick began to learn about Gatsbys business with Wolfsheim and Nick learns of Gatsbys past. Now the eyes forshadowed everyting that took place in the hotel room with gatsby, tom and diasy and the car accident.
ReplyDeleteWhy did Gatsby call off all of his parties?
ReplyDelete- I think that Gatsby’s parties were to lure daisy in.
ReplyDeleteNext when the group discovers that Wilson knows of Myrtle's infidelity Nick compares it to the situation that Tom is in.
ReplyDeleteJacob to answer your question I think that Daisy is a little ticked off that Gatsby is trying to force her to say she never loved Tom.
ReplyDelete1. Will Daisy ever leave Tom for Gatsby?
ReplyDelete- Even though we can clearly see that Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby, I don't see her ever leaving Tom to be with him.
"Was Daisy driving?" "Yes," he said after a moment, "but of course I'll say I was." (pg 143)
