  1. I think this chapter shows a real emotional almost weak side to Gatsby. Love is definently his weakness, makes him act almost like a kid again.

  2. Do you think that gatsby's house tour was luring daisy back to him? or was it to show her how successful he was without her?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think Daisy may have been crying because she was sad because she realized Gatsby's true identity, and she realized who he was and that they could not be together anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Lee, I dont think that love is Gatsby is not the important weekness to Gatsby. I think that he is more upset that he lost something and thats why it looks like he week with love. He is just really upset at something that he lost to another person.

I agree with you, it's almost like it is a girl he has a crush on but has never talked to before because when daisy arrived at nicks house and gatsby was hiding it was kind of as if he did not want anyone to know he was there.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sean, i think it could have been both. HE might want to show her that he is successful with out her, but alsoi he might be saying that he welcomes her with open arms.

    ReplyDelete
  7. When they were at Nick's house, i think Gatsby said something mean to Daisy because she was crying and he was very happy. Gatsby could be just a mean person who has extravagant parties and he is uncovering himself to daisy

    ReplyDelete
  8. What do you think is significance of the color green? There was the green light back in chapter one; Gatsby sent people over to cut Nicks grass, I'm just curious if there's any big significance of that color.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Gatsby's house was used for both purposes sean, he had such open "wild" parties to lure in anyone with hopes that Daisy would wander in some day after seeing all the commotion. Once she comes into the house he hopes that it will impress her because initially he wasn't rich enough to be with her os he wanted to show her that he made himself worthy of her.

    ReplyDelete
  10. In this chapter, Gatsby’s house is compared to the house of a feudal lord. The book talks about his lifestyle being fitting for a British aristocrat. Also, when his mansion was built, the builder tried to get the neighboring houses to get matching roofs to compliment the mansion. Do you think this is because Gatsby wants to be an aristocrat among aristocrats?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sean-
I think it is luring her back to him because she was looking at the house with such admiration, "that huge place there?... I love it". So since she is admiring his things so much she will maybe start to love him again.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think if Daisy and Gatsby get back together, i dont think that it will ever live up to expectations, because Gatsby has worked so hard to get Daisy back, she almost cant live up to it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Do you think the weather is reflected off of nicks change in character going on in the chapter 5?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nate
I disagree I think she was crying because she realized that he had the money and they could finally be together. It also relates to Fitzgerald's life because he was told he could not be with the woman he loved because he was poor.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think Gatsby was really trying to show off how important and rich he was to daisy by showing off all his fancy clothes and shirts. It is as if he is flaunting that he has so much money everything he owns is so nice.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In this chapter, the rain is the most important piece of symbolism during Gatsby and Daisy’s reunion. Rain is used as, typically, a symbol of redemption and of rebirth. This is why, in many romantic movies, the couple kisses in the rain after a huge fight. What happened with Gatsby and Daisy is basically the same idea. They had been out of contact for years, and years, and finally, finally, they have a chance to meet again. They feel a bit unsure. They cling deeply to their insecurities from the past. But then it starts raining. The rain, like a nice shower, washes away all of the doubt. It symbolizes the great rebirth of their relationship. This is going to be the turning point of the book, where Gatsby and Daisy become bf/gf again.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sean, It was both. He wants Daisy so he is going to show her stuff that will make her want him. He is hoping that she is so materialist that his house will lure her to his side. But he is also trying to get one up on her. He thinks that showing her his house will say "Hey look what i have. This could have been all yours."

    ReplyDelete
  18. Even though Gatsby seems to have "power" over Daisy with his wealth and her emotions (when she cries) he is still very weak. He is attatched to her very much and he puts on a mask when hes around her which makes the reader wonder what their conversation consisted of. Will we ever know what they read? What does Daisy think of the suprise of Gatsby? Does she regret marrying Tom? How does Gatsby stay so happy while she is so sad?

    ReplyDelete
  19. SeanF
He probably showed Daisy his house so she would feel guilty, be lured into coming back to him, and to show her how he lives and how she could live.

    ReplyDelete
  20. seanf-
I feel like it's a little of both. I think Gatsby really wants Daisy back but he wants to do that by showing her his riches and convincing her he would be a better option than her husband.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Grace, I beleive that the color green symbolizes that there is always hope coming towards you. Because he seems to always bring it back to how the green light looks on the dock.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I also agree with cody that the job is shady. The job is connected to gatsby, the lifestyle goes with the job.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So, Gatsby throws a massive mountain of multi-colored shirts onto the bed. At which, Daisy starts crying. It would be easy to toss this off as Daisy being an over-emotional whiny crybaby, but I like to take the difficult route.
Anyways. So Daisy sees this pile of clearly magnificent shirts, and starts sobbing. Why? She says afterwards that she has “never seen such beautiful shirts.” If you read into this (like you should) you would see that Tom must not have such fantastic shirts. Yes. Tom isn’t as rich as Gatsby. He may come from old money, but that just isn’t enough. Saddened, Daisy sees that she should have stayed with Gatsby. She could have had the rich life she’s used to, as well as the sweet man who loves her.
So, what can we read from this? Daisy is a selfish jerk. She knows she shouldn’t have married Tom. But what it takes for her to realize this is not the fact that Gatsby is an utterly sweet, unselfish gentleman, but the fact that he has better shirts than her abusive husband. This shows you exactly how shallow and materialistic Daisy is. She’s a terrible, terrible person and I don’t like her.
So there's my two cents on that.

  24. When gatsby offered nick a job, do you think it was in the shady tybe of bussiness that gatsby seems to have in his past?
-I think Nick is feeling uncomfortable about accepting the job because he is affraid to get involved in things like that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Perhaps Gatsby offered Nick the job so he could make money off of Nick and maybe to use him for something bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why did Gatsby offer Nick a job to work with him? Wouldn't Gatsby make more without him?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Katie- I agree that the rain is a huge symbol in this chapter, it continues until gatsby feels better insted of nervous and worried. I also think that the green light plays another roll, mainly because Gatsby tells Daisy that he obsessed over it/her

    ReplyDelete
  28. Brooke, I think that Daisy is starting to regret marring Tom. It only took Gatsby a few hours to get Daisy to be with him. She is totaly in love with the man of her past and she hates Tom. She could easly feel that if she just waited she could be with the man she sees now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it’s almost sickening that Daisy has tears of joy when she comes over to Gatsby’s house and sees all of the expensive stuff he has. Do you think that these characters are so morally corrupt, that even at their most genuine core, they are still fixated on material possessions?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Do you think that because daisy see's that Gatsby has money now do you think that she is going to want to be with him instead of Tom.

I think that she is going to have an affair and it won't be a big deal until tom finds out that it is with Gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Laura- I think Gatsby was, in a weird sort of way, trying to reward Nick through giving him a chance to make tons of money like him. Like, he wants Nick to be as good as him and as rich as him. He wanted to reward Nick for helping him and Daisy get back together.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kaitie
Thats a lot more than two cents!
I agree with you, instead of marrying for love and promises, she chose the richer man instead of trusting that her love would follow through.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I still think Gatsby is trying to become friends with nick so he can get closer to diasy through nick.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Laura- I sort of agree with what your saying but I don't think he's using him to make money off of him, I'm sure he has other things that are pulling in large sums of cash for him. I feel like the jobs are a gateway to something bigger almost partner with Gatsby, something to find Nick's trust with.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hunter-
I think the weather represents Nicks mood. It sort of reflects his emotions, and feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Kevin, i beleive that he would offer that job to Nick because he might want protection because of the buisness that he is in.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe Gatsby offerend Nick a job as penance for bringing him and Daisy together again. Gatsby's life was so focused on becoming good enough for Daisy and she seemed to be the most important thing to him so he wanted to show Nick appreciation for what he had done for Gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i think the green light that appears in many chapters is a symbol for desire, because Gatsby sees it when he thinks of Daisy, and Nick sees it when he wants to know more about Gatsby in chapter 1

    ReplyDelete
  39. Brooke L.
-Daisy will always regret marrying Tom because Daisy gets cheated on and beating but she puts up with Tom because she love's the life style and now that Gatsby has money and she will tend to lean towards Gatsby more and then we will see some tension between Gatsby and Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Katie-
That's a very interesting perspective, I didn't notice it much while reading but I agree that rain is a very powerful symbol in this chapter; what do you- or anyone else in the class for that matter- think about the symbolism of Daisy crying? because using the anlage of cleansing tears would probably be considered much dirtier than rain.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Considering what the inner circle is talking about i think that Gatsby did not inherit the money and then loose it during the war but that he found out ways to make a quick buck in the army.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Katie,
But if he was offering the job as a reward, wouldn't he have specified what the job was? Try harder to get Nick to take it?

    ReplyDelete
  43. i agree with nate that green light is a symbol for desire, or love even because it is always involved with daisy and that is the thing Gatsby wants most in his life.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Do you think that Nick and Gatsby are really friends? or is this all a plan by gatsby to get to daisy?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that if Tom ever finds out about Gatsby and Daisy's relationship, he's going to try and assert his authority over Daisy. Because he's that kind of guy, which is terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I feel that the clock that Gatsby breaks is a symbol of time, it has taken him all this time to aquire what he has and its all finally coming together for him and Daisy. But why does the clock break, are they not going to work?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the preperation for Daisy's arrival represents Gatsby's relationship with Nick. He tries so hard to clean it up, or shape up the edges for everyone else to see. But the visual appearance cannot cover up the fact that it is empty inside. Gatsby lives in his huge house all alsone and their relationship together is not quite connected. They are never on the same page because they use eachother for their own good. Will that gap ever be closed? Or will it just become farther and farther apart?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think Tom is more scared of Daisy having an affair with Gatsby because he is a rich man who could actually win Daisy's love, as oppose to a poor man where it would be just for kicks.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Katie, I also realized this only after you pointed it out. I do agree one hundred percent because she realized that she had madee the wrong descision in who she chose.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Jacob, What i've notice through this book is that the very rich people resemble children. I think that all the very rich people have grown up raised in security and never really matured. Because of this they were never really installed with a true scence of morals. They also seam to be raised to vale materistic life styles more than morality baised life styles.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So Daisy doesn't really care what Tom thinks/knows because she will secretly keep going to Gatsby's without a care in the world for what he thinks. Why doesn't she just end the relationship between her and Tom? she has Gatsby and Tom has Myrtle. Why not leave eachother so they can both be happy

    ReplyDelete
  52. Laura- Well, he pushed pretty hard. I don't really know though. But Gatsby has seemed like he needs to use people, so maybe that is what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Do you think that Nick would be assisting Daisy in having an affair if it wasn’t with Gatsby? Why does he stand idly by watching all these people in his life make such bad decisions? Is he letting this go so he can further connect with Gatsby?

    ReplyDelete
  54. lbutler
I think that the clock breaking is a foreshadowing of Daisy and Gatsbys relationship not lasting. There's the factor of Tom's Jealousy, and Daisys marriage to Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I feel that Daisy and Gastby will get back together. When Nick left them alone and came back a few hours later they both seemed very happy. I think that Dasiy will want to get back with Gatsby because i feel that she isnt happy with Tom. I think that Daisy should fallow what she feels is right.

    ReplyDelete
  56. sean, I don't think Nick and Gatsby would be friends without Daisy's involvement because Gatsby is so focused on getting Daisy he doesn't seem to be social with anyone else. He also tries to keep his conversations to a minimum because he doesn't want people to learn his secrets. I think he used Nick to get at Daisy but maybe he enjoys having a friend instead of always being so conserved.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Is Tom going to do something bad out of jealousy towards gatsby? is he going to hurt gatsby or his family?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Grace- Definitely. The tears came with the rain. When you cry it's a sort of cleansing of the emotions. So I think Fitzgerald was really just trying to push the whole "cleansing the past" issue.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think that Gatsby will see that Diasy ios something she is not, i believe she will be disapointed Diasy once if they continue on in their relationship. That also might be a forshadow to the clock breaking.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Lee
I think it is that it has taken a long time for them to get back together but that the relationship is not going to last.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Kevin, I think that she doesnt want to end the relationship because she can do exactly what tom is doing, she can milk both rich men fo rwhat they have, because she might have some qualites that tom had and gatsby didnt, and visa-versa.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Nate, great comment. Awesome job. keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Kevin, Its all about looks. If they were to seperate with a child and go to different lovers then it would look very bad. Exspecially for Tom, how he would look very bad because he would be leaving a very popular wife for one of less porularty and of a lower class than the previous. It seams to all have something to do with how their pracived by their socsiety.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Do you think Gatsby likes the way he became? what I mean by that because he did these jobs like oil and drugs all of this just to impress Daisy so you think he likes what he did and does to just be with Daisy is it wroth it to Gatsby?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think that one of the things Fitzgerald tried to get across about people at that time is that Girls went for rich guys and people that had money would have a more fun, rich lifestyle so that is why I think Daisy will fall for gatsby

    ReplyDelete
  66. Why did Gatsby go with the Alcohol business? he said "I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business". Wouldnt he make more with oil?

    ReplyDelete
  67. When Daisy comes over to Gatsby's house he asks the man to play piano. They song he chooses to play has lyrics that say "the rich get richer". I think this song was chosen to tell Daisy that Gatsby will continue to become rich to please her. It is a never ending chain and he will go to the end of the world to compete for her and become as rich as he can for her. What will happen when he becomes too rich? Is wealth really the only thing she is looking for?

    ReplyDelete
  68. If the relationship with Gatsby and Diasy does continue will Gatsbies sketch business also be able to continue?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hunter, I don't think Gatsby gives much thought to how he got his money because his biggest concern is getting Daisy to see what he did for her.

    ReplyDelete
  70. jacobs2012-
I think that Nick would help Gatsby if the relationship was with someone other than Daisy because his morals are constantly changing from the 1st chapter when he quoted his father "all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" he keeps slipping into weaker morals doing more and more wrong things; he's probably helping Gatsby to have connections with a rich connected wealthy man.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think that Tom is going to get really mad at Dasiy for meeting with Gatsby and I believe that he will alos get mad at Nick for helping Gatsy meet up with Dasiy.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Andy and Cortez-
Do you think that everyone in that time period had affairs like Daisy and Tom then?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Kevin
I don't think they should break it off because it is sort of showing wealth because if they are together and have a nice house together people will think they get along but if they break up people will think that they are just going to get bored again and have another affair.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think that clocks might be a symbol for time ticking away for Gatsby and Daisy's relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Kevin, I think that he stuck with the drinking business because it was a show of how risky he is, thus giving him more mysterie.

    ReplyDelete
  76. What were some changes that you noticed that occurred throughout the chapter regarding Gatsby’s personality?

    ReplyDelete
  77. lbutler
The clock motif continues a bit on page 97.
"Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an overturned clock."
Is time running out for Daisy and Gatsby's love?
I think so. With his lifestyle, how could he support Daisy? He partys and spends extensively, and i don't think that's the life Daisy wants.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Kevin, for starters when he says drug buesness he ment the traveling doctors that were popular during this time. Not columbian cartel members with illigal drugs, so please stop asking me right now. And no he wouldn't make more money with oil. Right now during Prohibition the most indemand product is Alchohal. So people will pay alot of money to get it. More so than they would for oil.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I dont think Gatsby is trying to achieve the american dream, i dont see anyhwere in the text that would indiatce he is. He is most likely breaking american law to get his money if he is trying to achieve the american dream.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Dakota
    - But do you think theirs some regrets of what Gatsby did to get the money and Gatsby might of thought of Daisy being much more and now when he actually got Daisy he doesn't like it and all that work was for nothing

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think Tom will be upset that Daisy is in love with Gatsby but perhaps for the wrong reasons because he thinks it's fun or exciting to be with two women and if he loses Daisy he will only have Myrtle. He betrays Daisy though so to be mad at her for loving someone else would be hypocritical

    ReplyDelete
  82. Andy-
Why would he want the Mystery and the risk that comes along with it though?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hunter, I think if Gatsby doesn't end up with Daisy he might regret how he got his fortune because he dedicated his life to this task and if it was all for nothing maybe then he will see the wrong in it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Do you think that Daisy will go with Tom or Gatsby or even both?

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think that the broken clock symbolizes the time that was lost between Gatsby and Daisy. I also think that the clock shows that their relationship may not last too long because of Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Kevin, Probably because it made his parties way more attractive and appealing. He probably likes the rumors.

    ReplyDelete
  87. brett-
If gatsby's relationship with daisy continues, He is going to cease work at his sketch bussiness because somthing will happen to gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Grace- I agree with the fact that I think he is only doing this to get further connected with wealthy people. But I disagree with the fact that he would assist Gatsby in having an affair if it wasn’t with Daisy, just because I think Nick feels bad for Daisy being cheated on by Tom and he truly believes that they have a genuine love for one another

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jealosy plays a huge role in this chapter. I think it is just a jumbled up triangle they are mixed up in. Nick envys Gatsby and Gatsby envys Tom. This whole story revolves around Daisy and I think these men will discover that they are not fighting for her but it is a competition for a higher power. She is not as great as they are fantasizing her to be. What will then men do when they realize this? What will happen to Daisy?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hunter-
i think he will end up going with both because she will have more attention and she will have more money and will be living an exciting life

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hunter, Daisy is going to go with Gatsby but not in public. She will be with him but still be maired to Tom. Then something bad will happen to Daisy and it will be caused by Gatsby. She will then figure out that both men in her life suck, and will leave them both.

    ReplyDelete
  92. kevinp-
I think that if Gatsby had the legitimate businesses and the shady ones as well it would be harder to track all of his income and he would make even more money if more of them would be successful, I'm not sure of any symbolic value of which business he is operating.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Dakota- I think Gatsby build up his entire fortune illegallt just to try and get Daisy, so i only think Gatsby will regret what he did if he doesnt end up with Daisy.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Kevin p
    - But Kevin more money more problem
why would she go with both

    ReplyDelete
  95. Tom is definately going to get between Gatsby and Daisy. She is his territory so he will get rid of whoever tries to take away his territory.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think Gatsby is completely using Nick just for his own interests and i dont like Gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Brooke-
I feel like when and if the men realize Daisy's true value then she will start to fade away with out the support of powerful and rich men. She will not be able to continue her lifestyle without the attention.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Brooke- I think that the triangle is more complex than even that. I believe that Nick secretly envies Gatsby, and that Myrtle envies Daisy and vice versa. I believe that there will be a conflict between all of the characters and it will ultimately end the book.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I think gatsby would prefer to keep nick out of his personal life but it it the cost gatsby is going to have to pay to get diasy.

  101. At the end of this chapter, Nick leaves Gatsbvy and Daisy alone his Gatby's house. While he's walking out Gatsby looks at Nick like he doesn't know him. He got his girl, which is all he wanted from Nick, so that's the end of it. He was being a jerk for using him. This brings it back to the overall message that the rich are shallow and strive for their own good. They don't care about who they walk on, as long as they get to the top that's all they want. Fitzgerald is not fond of the rich because he says what a bad man Gatsby (and the rich) are. His opinion still stays strong even through this chapter because we are beginning to discover the true person Gatsby is. Overall, I think it was a good chapter because it forshadows many things especially the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby and even Nick and Gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  102. My predictions for the upcoming chapters are that Gatsby gets shot in the back by Nick.

    ReplyDelete
  103. asticka, I think Gatsby does trust Nick because if he didn't he wouldn't ask him for such an important favor

    ReplyDelete
  104. like what cody said, do you think Tom will end up shooting Gatsby? or will it be someone from his job?

    ReplyDelete
  105. -Jacob

I think that he wants to be seen by Daisy not necessarily the most influential man on the block.
It makes me wonder why he would let Nicks property be so down ridden and well almost atrocious. Gatsby certainly has enough money to buy the property or just send a house keeper and a gardener over all the time to keep it looking nice. I'm just curious as to why other than Nicks connection with Daisy he would keep him around.
    -Brooke
It does seem weird that he can stay so attached to Daisy after five years. They seem like they will have their own little affair while Tom has his. I seem to sense a reflection on Fitzgerald's life; how Zelda cheated on him and then when she was in the mental institution he cheated on her. I almost want to believe that Daisy will leave Tom for Gatsby but that may just be to hopeful.

    Jacob-

I think that Nick doesn't have much of a problem with Gatsby and Daisy getting together because of her strained relation ship with Tom and that Tom is also cheating on Daisy.

It just seems that no matter what happens in this book Nick seems to slip through unscathed and with out being thought of as a cause for everything that happens.

Why would Gatsby try buy Nick off? I can only come up with two things that would be reason enough. Either Gatsby wants leverage on Nick or if something goes wrong he can eliminate Nick more easily.

It seems to me that in Five years people can change so so much and how would Gatsby know that Daisy wants to even be with him still......

  106. I am one of the students from class today whose computer wasnt working. My annotations were signed and in class took some notes and questions down to what I would write later. I just wanted to give you a reminder before hand.

During this whole discussion that took place today in class one of my questions was; how do you think Gatsby feels about getting money the illegal way? What I believe is the answer to that is he isn't proud of it, but knows he has the money now that he was wanting for a long time and now that he doesnt do the illegal things as much, I believe he just doesn't care as much anymore. Another question relating to this subject is; how do you think Daisy would feel if she found out how some of Gatsbys money was made? I feel like she would be kind of upset with how it was made, but maybe she then wouldnt care because she likes money. What would be the reason behind why Daisy was crying? I believe it is because of joy. She might be joyful because she is back and seeing Gatsby after not for many years. Then, maybe she is crying out of happiness to see how much he has changed. On the other hand she might have been crying with the feeling of regret because of realizing what she had and not staying with it and him and now she sees how well he has done and wished things were differently. Another question would be how would Tom feel if Daisy cheated on him? In class this was discussed and I believe Tom would care if Daisy cheated on him especially if it was with a man who had the money and then at the same time if it was someone Daisy might have known from the past.

    ReplyDelete
  107. My predictions for the next chapter is that Nick will tell Jordan about how he is helping Gatsby get back together will Daisy. Then Jordan will tell Tom about Daisy getting back together with Gatsby. After Tom hears about this one of two things could happen either Tom lets Daisy go and Gatsby and Daisy live happily ever after or Tom tries to find a way to bring Gatsby down by bringing up Gatsby’s past. The second one would make a better story I think.
