Jacob I think that nick sort of assumes that it is part of the lifestyle because he knows that tom is having an affair as well so i think he just thinks it is normal.
One thing that Gatsby said at the very end of chapter 6 struck me as very important-- when Nick said, "You can't repeat the past," Gatsby replied (incredulously, I might add,) "Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!" This was veeery eye opening as to Gatsby's inentions. Gatsby, throughout the entire book, has had an obsession with reliving his past. All of his actions, his getting money, his buying a mansion, they were all for getting Daisy back and therefore getting back his past, or his supposed golden days. Little does he know that he is currently living his golden days. I'm thinking that he will probably regret his decision to chase Daisy. Daisy will ultimately run back to Tom when Gatsby fails her in some way. That's what I've been thinking.
Jacob- I think that Nick never talks of the affair because he is friends with Gatsby and if he even mentions it to one person then Tom could find out about it because the group of people that they hang out with are very gossipy which might lead to Tom finding out about the affair.
Lee, I think Gatsby's life would have been way different because instead of possibly getting rich in a bad way, he would have inherited the money and i believe lead a completely different lifestyle.
Why do Tom and the Sloanes have such an issue with Gatsby? Is there a better reason than just the social clash between the East Eggers and West Eggers?
I believe that just like Gatsby going to college and soon after starting he drops out is very similair to Fitzgeralds real story about his life and what exactly happened to him. In this way Fitzgerald possibly wrote this in the book as a look back on his real life.
Emily- to answer your question yes i do think that Nick is telling the truth about Gatsby's past because all of the timeline parts fit perfectly and the part about Dan Cody makes sense.
Lee I think gatsby would not have the success that he has now. He is rich and got his money because he wanted the lifestyle that Dan Cody had, and now he has that lifestyle
Jacob, i think that he doesn't fully understand how much of an affair that Gatsby and Daisy are having. It said in the middle of the chapter that he didn't go over to Gatsby house for several weeks and Nick doesn't seam like the kind of man that would call up Daisy to find out info. Also i think that Nick still has some morals to him. He must be thinking that it would be impolite and disrespectfull to tell everything that Gatsby and Daisy did.
Tom is suspicious of the whole relationship between Gatsby and Daisy but why should he care if they have an affair when he himself is having an affair?
Why do you think Gatsby's last party was disappointing. Nick found it oppresive and even Daisy didn't have a good time, could it be because Tom was there?
Jacob- I think NIck just wants to stay out of Gatsby's business and he doesnt want to create any problems between Tom, his former friend, and Daisy, his cousin.
Katie- I think that you're right. It seems as though everything Gatsby does it to get his life back to how it was when he first met Daisy. However, I agree with Nick that you can't repeat the past no matter how hard you try it'll never be exactly the same everyone has baggage and it's dragging Gatsby down.
I love how in this chapter we get to see where Gatsby really lived in the mid-west. Both North Dakota and Minnesota but it still leaves a question open about what kind of relations he had/has with Oxford. After all he went to St. Olaf's College would this mean that his service in the war was also false?
Here's my thoughts on why Gatsby changed his name from Gatz to Gatsby: Gatz was a working class name, a name that held no weight, no substance. So, he changed it to a name that had zero bearing, that he could build himself. It's the exact same reason why he chose to change his whole identity. He wants to be a different person, who's rich and famous.
Jacob- I think that Nick never talks about Gatsby and Daisys affiar becuase either he doesn't want it to lead to more problems or he doesnt care about telling anyone especially tell Tom because he knows about Tom having an affair as well.
Related to what the inner circle is talking about, maybe Tom left because he wanted to explore and see the people he would rather be with. He liked to have everything he wants and there were a lot of girls at the party. Maybe he wanted to look like he was really social and to find another girl.
lbutler- I think if Gatsby had actually recieved the money he wouldn't have tried to work or earn money. He would think money would just come to him and life would be easy. I think it turned out the best for Gatsby though because he is now very rich.
I agree with Nate because Nick doesn't want to get involved with all the issue's the affair is creating because he is so familiar with both Tom, and Daisy.
Brianna- I agree about Fitzgerald writing this book in part as a reflection on his own life. But why would he write in the whole Dan Cody thing cause that doesn't seem to reflect any particular moment in Fitzgerald's life.
Cory, Tom does care about Daisy but he also cares about his own reputation and him having an affair raises his reputation because he thinks that people will think that he is bulletproof and he can do anything to the people that he is suppose to love, but if Daisy has an affair it looks bad on him because people might think that he couldn't satisfy her with his style of living.
Who are Mr. and Mrs. Sloane? They take Tom to Gatsby's for drinks but who really are they? What is their relationship with Gatsby and what does it represent?
Cory I think that Nick thinks his is ok because he is in "true love" and that his is the right thing for sure. But when he looks at anybody else having an affair he thinks less of them because there situation is "different"
Cory Tom cares because Daisy is his. His beautiful wife, and if someone else is trying to come between him and his wife he will definately notice and do something about it.
Grace- I also agree with Nick on that. No matter how much you struggle, or fight, you can't be the exact same as you always were. Daisy has changed. She's just as careless, but more cynical and disillusioned with the world. Both of them want to have something that they can't. I think Daisy, personally, is just using Gatsby to get Tom to be jealous. And, as we see in this chapter, it's working. He was super jealous at the party.
I feel like in the end Daisy will end up with Gatsby after finding out about Tom cheating and lying but then at the same time what will she do when she finds out about Gatsby and his past.
I think that Daisy will leave Tom for Gatsby, because it seems like the only reason Daisy is with tom is for the money, and she could get money and love with Gatsby.
Grace- I believe that Mr. and Mrs. Sloane are just used as a way to bring Tom into the Forefront of Gatsby and the story I don't think they play any significant role in the story.
at gatsby's party daisey does not have a good time. Is there still love between them or is daisey just looking for the best parties and the richest men?
@ conner, carlos, grace, and sean- I agree with all of your opinions on why: they are friends, he condones their behavior, and he doesn’t want to get involved. But do you think that even in spite of all of these reasons he would at least mention it? It’s not as if they are not having an affair, it is assumed but it’s curious that the reader doesn’t get a chance to receive more detail about it. Is it purely that Nick doesn’t know the details, or do you think Nick doesn’t tell more about the affair because he empathizes with Gatsby’s failure to obtain Daisy?
Nick probably doesn't want to get involved with the scandal between Daisy Tom and Gatsby. It is so complicated and stressed that anything could happen.
Dakota, Gatsby is enfatuated with Daisy. He can only think of the times he spent with her before she got married. His ego is also so big that he thinks that she only had good times when she was with him and now that she is with Tom, she is misserable and must be wanting what had happened in the past. Right now it seams that Gatsby is starting to be delustional and not reading situations the way their suppose to be.
Dakota M. - I would agree that Tom was just trying to make Daisy jealous because he saw how interested and trusting she was towards Gatsby. Tom seems to a little bit of a narsasist always having to need someones attention or be better than someone else.
I agree with Davis, in the inner circle that Daisy will choose Gatsby because he has been there for her and Tom is having a bunch of affairs so Daisy will choose the person that doesn't hurt her, and is rich, Gatsby.
Dakota I think that Gatsby thinks that he can re-create the past, because if he(James Gatz) can create himself (Jay Gatsby) out of nothing or even out of his own imagination he can certainly create something that has already happened
Dakota- I believe that Gatsby thinks he is still a sly guy that he was back in the days when Daisy liked him. Also he knows that he is rich and that can buy you anything you like and recreating the past would be easy. Personally I think he has put himself too much into a hole and the past is gone and now Gatsby is living a whole different lifestyle.
Oh, and a sort of out of place question: Why in the world would Daisy offer to kiss Nick? And not Gatsby? And what does she mean by green cards? So odd.
Do you think Daisy will ever settle down and stop thinking about money and who has the most and chose one person based on more than just the money portion.
Green could be Daisy's symbolistic color, because in the first chapter when Gatsby was looking longingly towards the sky and there was green light, i think he was thinking of Daisy.
Tyler Daisy may not have a good time but that could be the way she is. I don't think that she is just looking for the best parties or the richest man but I think she cares about Gatsby but that she doesn't want to show tom that she likes him.
Brianna I think Daisy will choose the richest man or the easiest way. Which man would be able to support her lifestyle and wouldn't cause much trouble between her and the other man.
I think Gatsby feels like he dedicated his whole life towards getting her back, he wants them to be everything he dreamed about together. He can see that Daisy doesn't have fun at his party so it upsets him because he might have wasted his time since it's not looking like what he dreamed about.
I think the green card is a symbol for change in Daisy's life because she wants to Tom jealous when she tells NIck the card can let guys kiss her, and maybe it is foreshadowing that she will end up with Gatsby.
Tyler, Daisy wasn't havig fun because Tom was there. I would have to think that if Tom wasn't there at the party, then the party would have been more twords Daisy's pleasure. But also she is just looking for rich men. If a man moved next to Gatsby with more money she would go to his party's not Gatsby's.
Katie I have no idea why she asked to kiss Nick because aren't they some how related? But i think she did it so Gatsby would get jealous and show that he cared about her more
Katie- Tom was really jealous at the party but do you think there is a part of Daisy that still loves Gatsby? I feel like once people reach a certain age then they wish they could go back to when their life was at its prime. When Daisy first met and fell in love with Gatsby she did love him; he was her hero a soldier and she thought he was rich. Gatsby's money was from trying to get her back and be able to marry her but he went off to war and by the time he was rich enough to be "worthy" of her she was taken which is why he tries to lure her in with the lavish parties.
I think Daisy's color white almost means perfect and when things don't work out like they should (the party) he mood changes (and possibly her color?). I could see her color changing or wearing different colors neaqr the end of the book.
Dakota- I think that Gatsby, after having regained a fortune, having rekindled a relationship with an old flame, believes that he can do anything. Why would something that is normally impossible be impossible for him? Oh, and as a connection with time-- Lots of Shakespearean villains believe they have complete control over time and its flow. I think this connects really well with Gatsby, and his belief that he can regain the past and he's in control of something uncontrollable.
Kevin, i think that Myrtle will not be the one that ruins Gatsby and Daisy's affair, i think that it will be Jordan. Myrtle was afraid of Gatsby finding anything about her and she probably doesn't care unless Tom wants to divorce Daisy but can't because of the money getting divided but Jordan is friends with all the characters that know about the affair which makes me think that she will tell Tom about the affair.
@ Brianna and Nate- I agree with the fact that he does not want to create any more conflict than what already exists, but I think we almost know more about Tom’s affair than Gatsby’s, whom is a much more distant character. Do you think that Fitzgerald wants to continue this idea of mystery behind Gatsby’s mask by not allowing us into the details of their relationship?
Do you think Nick and Jordan have a chance at being together anymore? It seems like Jordan has lost interest in him because he isn't as exciting as he once was, the drama between Daisy and Gatsby has been more interesting. So she just goes with whoever has the most going on.
Kevin- I dont think that Myrtle will have very much to do with Gatsby and Daisy cause unless tom figures it out he wont be able to tell her cause and therefore not be able to interfere.
Yes I agree with the inner circle about Daisy and her name, the color green and her maybe being greedy. I agree with this becuase after what we have learned about her she is one to like money and didnt stay with Gatsby at the begining since he wasnt rich. I think she is greedy becuase if she really loved him she would have stayed, but instead she cares about herself and the money because that is what can get her more.
brianna- I think that Daisy was overwhelmed by all his money and clothing that now it's not about money its about love. In the past it would have been all about the money but she doesn't have to worry about that anymore. It might be too late now for Gatsby to get Daisy back but we'll see.
Kevin, It not that she wants Gatsby to prove he cares for him but something else. I think that Daisy is making a power play. She is showing Tom that she is powerfull and by doing this it lookes like she is bating Gatsby to do something. She was trying to show her husband that if he can cheet on her then she can do exactly the samething in public. Also she want to have fun.
Dan- does the green color of the card that if anyone gives her one she will kiss them, have to do anything with the green light on the lake in front of her house?
Grace- That is a spectacular point. She may feel a bit of rose-tinted nostalgia for him. They were young together, and they lived out some of the best years of her life. But she's a fickle girl, and I'm certain those feelings will change. She really seems wishy-washy to me.
Even after Daisy found out that Tom was cheating on her she stayed with him and she was probably upset because she felt betrayed but maybe she doesn't want to put Tom through the pain she felt so she hasn't told him about Gatsby.
Carlos But Daisy could leave Tom completely and then Tom may chase after her because he still loves her then Myrtle won't get any attention making her want to break them up?
Kevin, No that wont happen. Tom is rich so Daisy will stay with him. And Myrtle is not a rich woman. If she had the chance to get a rich lifestyle like she has now with Tom, she will not break up with him. She needs his money other wise she'll just be the wife of a machanich.
Laura Maybe Jordan is losing interest in Nick but i think they will stay together for a while because they have fun together and even though Nick is not as fun as he was they still like to be together. Considering she wanted to be with him even though gatsby had more going on in his life.
Cortez- I agree with you that Daisy is trying to make Tom jealous in public to show that Tom is not the only one who has the power in the relationship.
I think that James Gatz changes his name to Jay Gatsby because James Gatz sounds like an honest working class man however Jay Gatsby rolls off the tongue it is smooth, sleek, and sly. Jay Gatsby has effortless presence and sounds like a powerful man.
Kevin, if Tom wants to break them up then he has to pay for it by giving her money but if Myrtle is still in the picture then they could say that Tom was having the affair first which will cost him more of his fortune. But Jordan who is friends with all the characters tells Tom about the affair then Tom's affair will come up because Jordan will tell Myrtle who then will tell Tom
Laura- I never thought that Jordan and Nick ever had a chance because Jordan doesn't seem to be the kind of person that would stick with one person for more than a month she seems so loose with her own morals that I never felt that they had a chance.
Jacob- I think that it is foreShadowing that in the end of the story, Tom is going to end up killing Gatsby because the conflict between them has gotten so bad.
I think that we see Toms feelings because throughout the book we haven't seen a good side of Tom necessarily so we see him get even deeper into this bad, angry person.
nate- i think by daisey trying to make tom jealous in public might make tom start to realize that she is cheating on him with gatsby because she is trying to make him look better than tom
Tyler- :) I think that the green card and the light defiantly have some similarities with eachother. THe green is representing Gatsby's envy of Tom and that every day Gatsby wishes he was with Daisy. If Gatsby ends up getting that kiss the envy might be over and the green light will turn off.
Nate, I think that their affair will be revealed and Tom will threaten Gatsby in a public place to make him seem like a bad person but Gatsby will probably have some plan to make himself look better than Tom. Probably by announcing Tom's affair with Myrtle.
Nate- I could see Tom and Daisy falling apart and Daisy coming to Gatsby. Yet I see Tom not feeling to well about this and may end up doing something that he will regret
Nate, First off i'd like to thank you for you interesting comments. And i to would like to agree with you. At the way its going i predict that Gatsby and Daisy's affaire will be come public and Daisy will run away from it all. But who will do the dumping is the question?
Gatsby changes his name from James Gatz. This is because he was ready for a new image. His parents were unsuccessful farm people and his education was from Lutheran College St. Olaf (in Minnesota). Then he met Dan Cody and everything changes. He looks up to Dan Cody and wanted his wealth. They spent time together on the boat and he is the reason Gatsby inherited the money. After that, the motif of the clock comes up again, does Gatsby consider this stage in his life "wasted time"? How was Gatsby's life different before he met Daisy? Was there other reasons for his actions? What does Ella Kaye (came on board before Dan Cody died) represent? Later on in the chapter, Tom comes over to Gatsby's house. Suprisingly it does not lead to disater! When Tom comes over to Gatsby's party, it had an "uncomfortable" feeling and mood. He comes with her because he knows Daisy is going behind her back (he is jealous) and at the party he tries to make Gatsby jealous (show who's boss). Then it mentions looking through Daisy's eyes (a different point of view) which brings us back to the glasses in the sky. This whole story is about different point of views. Most of the time we see everything through Nick's eyes, but throughout the story it changes from Daisy's eyes to Gatsby's too. As the narrator Nick tries to keep his distance by saying the rich are bad, but as we approach the end of the story, he begins to get sucked into the wealth and partying life. At the end of chapter six, on page 109 "one fresh glance at Gatsby, would blot out those five years of unwavering devotion". Gatsby is obsessed with the past and he can't get over it. He expected her to completely change her mind at one glance and the new him but she didn't. Tom has the money and wealth and the old Gatsby gives her the respect and love she is looking for. At the snapshot of the memory, what did Gatsby never tell Daisy? That he loved her? "Love is like a fire, when it comes out, it either starts one, or burns one out". I am curious to see what kind of "fire" Daisy and Gatsby's relationship will turn out to be.
@Dan and Sean- so do you think that Fitzgerald is depriving us of some information and revealing other information, varying this from chapter to chapter to keep us interested in the forever ongoing conflict? Do you think the narration will change and we won’t learn more information about this topic until later, or will this issue continue to bring itself up again until the final conflict is resolved?
I think that Tom and the Sloanes have a problem with Gatsby because I think that Tom may feel that something is going on between Gatsby and Daisy.
I think Fitzgerald wrote the book based on how parts of life were like but he also added things that didnt happen in his real life to make the book not reflect really close to his life.
At the end of the book I think that Daisy will find out about Tom having an affair on her and she will leave Tom for Gatsby. I believe that Daisy was with Tom just for the money. So when/if she finds out about Tom and his affair then she will leave Tom cause nothing would be keeping her from staying with him sense Gatsby also has money. She also would go to Gatsby because hes always there for her unlike Tom.
If Daisy went to Gatsby's party why did she bring Tom with her? I dont think she really wanted him to be there, it seemed to be making her not have a good time.
Cortez- I think that your thoughts have been among the most thoughtful and educational ones ive seen on this blog today. Id encourage you to keep up the great work. Go Cortez!!!!!
Nate I agree with Cortez that you have very interesting comments but i disagree that Tom will find out. I think that there will be a huge build up of suspense and then it will happen in ch 8
Lee- I disagree with your comment because I think Tom has the leverage in the fight with Gatsby over Daisy. I think Gatsby might do something he will regret and end up losing Daisy and she will never forgive him.
rumors keep circulating about gatsby and a reporter even travles there to intervies him. nick is kind of trying to relate to gatsbys story. gatsby worked as a janitor and hated his job as a kid he thinks it is humiliating but thats how he paid his tuition and then worked on a lake fishing and digging for clams. he saw a yacht and he rowed out to warn the people of a storm coming in. dan cody the owner of the yacht and copper mougle was very greatful to gatsby and enployed the young gatz. one of his jobs was to keep cody from drinking to much beacuse he was a heavy drinker witch convinced gatsby to not be a drinker. cody eventually died leaving gatsby an inheritance of 25000 dollars but codys mistress prevented gatsby from obtaining it. at that moment gatsby became commited to becomming a wealthy succesful man. nick dose not see gatsby or daisy for weeks after he had set up the reunion but he eventually went by gatsbys house one afternoon and finds tom there drinking witch makes gatsby very nervous and annoyed and tells tom that he knows daisy. gatsby invites tom and the sloans who were also there to stay for dinner but they say no instead they invite gatsby to dinner and he says yes. the next day daisy and to go to a party at gatsbys house, tom was not having fun and dislikes gatsby so tom trys to keep a close eye on daisy. nick and daisy both dont have a good time at this party and daisy feels as if tom is oppressing her.
So in this chapter Why does Fitzgerald tell the story of Jay Gatsby now instead of early in the book. Do you think that Daisy and Jay gatsby will stay together and or do you think Gatsby past will get in the way of way of him and daisy. Do you think Jay Gatsby changes his name because he his trying to let go of his past and move on into the future. In the book Jay Gatsby wants to be like Dan cody which represent the way Nick looks at Gatsby. Then Jay Gatsby couldn't be with daisy becasue of the two different life styles they had and because of that Jay Gatsby does the best he can to try and be rich so they can be together. And Gatsby I can say is a little disapointed on the way Daisy wasn't enjoying herself at this huge party so you can already see that Daisy and Gatsby have no connectin at all and it seems that the only reason daisy dated Gatsby in the past because of their differences and now that he is now one of them she see's nothing in him. And I was wondering do you think that you start see Nick act like Gatsby now in a sort of way.

ReplyDeleteWhy does Nick never talk about Gatsby and Daisy having an affair?
ReplyDeleteHow would Gatsby's life be different if he would have actually received the $25,000 that was left to him?

His ego is also so big that he thinks that she only had good times when she was with him and now that she is with Tom, she is misserable and must be wanting what had happened in the past. Right now it seams that Gatsby is starting to be delustional and not reading situations the way their suppose to be.
ReplyDeleteDakota M.
ReplyDelete- I would agree that Tom was just trying to make Daisy jealous because he saw how interested and trusting she was towards Gatsby.
ReplyDeleteDakota
ReplyDeleteI think that Gatsby thinks that he can re-create the past, because if he(James Gatz) can create himself (Jay Gatsby) out of nothing or even out of his own imagination he can certainly create something that has already happened
Do you think Myrtle will ever try to ruin Daisy and Gatsby's affair?
ReplyDeleteDakota- I believe that Gatsby thinks he is still a sly guy that he was back in the days when Daisy liked him. Also he knows that he is rich and that can buy you anything you like and recreating the past would be easy. Personally I think he has put himself too much into a hole and the past is gone and now Gatsby is living a whole different lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteOh, and a sort of out of place question: Why in the world would Daisy offer to kiss Nick? And not Gatsby? And what does she mean by green cards? So odd.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Daisy will ever settle down and stop thinking about money and who has the most and chose one person based on more than just the money portion.
ReplyDeleteGreen could be Daisy's symbolistic color, because in the first chapter when Gatsby was looking longingly towards the sky and there was green light, i think he was thinking of Daisy.
ReplyDeletelaura- i agree i think if tom finds out that nick was invloved then it would hurt nicks chances with jordan
ReplyDeleteTyler
ReplyDeleteDaisy may not have a good time but that could be the way she is. I don't think that she is just looking for the best parties or the richest man but I think she cares about Gatsby but that she doesn't want to show tom that she likes him.
Brianna
ReplyDeleteI think Daisy will choose the richest man or the easiest way.
ReplyDeleteI think the green card is a symbol for change in Daisy's life because she wants to Tom jealous when she tells NIck the card can let guys kiss her, and maybe it is foreshadowing that she will end up with Gatsby.
ReplyDeleteTyler, Daisy wasn't havig fun because Tom was there. I would have to think that if Tom wasn't there at the party, then the party would have been more twords Daisy's pleasure. But also she is just looking for rich men. If a man moved next to Gatsby with more money she would go to his party's not Gatsby's.
ReplyDeleteKatie
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why she asked to kiss Nick because aren't they some how related? But i think she did it so Gatsby would get jealous and show that he cared about her more
Katie-
ReplyDeleteTom was really jealous at the party but do you think there is a part of Daisy that still loves Gatsby? I feel like once people reach a certain age then they wish they could go back to when their life was at its prime. When Daisy first met and fell in love with Gatsby she did love him; he was her hero a soldier and she thought he was rich. Gatsby's money was from trying to get her back and be able to marry her but he went off to war and by the time he was rich enough to be "worthy" of her she was taken which is why he tries to lure her in with the lavish parties.
-Tyler
ReplyDeleteDaisy will stay with Gatsby because he has tryed really hard to be with Daisy and he can fill all Daisy's needs
I think Daisy's color white almost means perfect and when things don't work out like they should (the party) he mood changes (and possibly her color?). I could see her color changing or wearing different colors neaqr the end of the book.
ReplyDeleteDakota- I think that Gatsby, after having regained a fortune, having rekindled a relationship with an old flame, believes that he can do anything. Why would something that is normally impossible be impossible for him?
ReplyDeleteOh, and as a connection with time-- Lots of Shakespearean villains believe they have complete control over time and its flow.
ReplyDelete@ Brianna and Nate- I agree with the fact that he does not want to create any more conflict than what already exists, but I think we almost know more about Tom’s affair than Gatsby’s, whom is a much more distant character. Do you think that Fitzgerald wants to continue this idea of mystery behind Gatsby’s mask by not allowing us into the details of their relationship?
ReplyDeleteDo you think Nick and Jordan have a chance at being together anymore?
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Jordan has lost interest in him because he isn't as exciting as he once was, the drama between Daisy and Gatsby has been more interesting. So she just goes with whoever has the most going on.
Kevin- I dont think that Myrtle will have very much to do with Gatsby and Daisy cause unless tom figures it out he wont be able to tell her cause and therefore not be able to interfere.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with the inner circle about Daisy and her name, the color green and her maybe being greedy. I agree with this becuase after what we have learned about her she is one to like money and didnt stay with Gatsby at the begining since he wasnt rich. I think she is greedy becuase if she really loved him she would have stayed, but instead she cares about herself and the money because that is what can get her more.
ReplyDeletebrianna- I think that Daisy was overwhelmed by all his money and clothing that now it's not about money its about love. In the past it would have been all about the money but she doesn't have to worry about that anymore. It might be too late now for Gatsby to get Daisy back but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteKevin, It not that she wants Gatsby to prove he cares for him but something else. I think that Daisy is making a power play. She is showing Tom that she is powerfull and by doing this it lookes like she is bating Gatsby to do something. She was trying to show her husband that if he can cheet on her then she can do exactly the samething in public. Also she want to have fun.
ReplyDeleteDan- does the green color of the card that if anyone gives her one she will kiss them, have to do anything with the green light on the lake in front of her house?
ReplyDeleteGrace- That is a spectacular point. She may feel a bit of rose-tinted nostalgia for him. They were young together, and they lived out some of the best years of her life. But she's a fickle girl, and I'm certain those feelings will change. She really seems wishy-washy to me.
ReplyDeleteEven after Daisy found out that Tom was cheating on her she stayed with him and she was probably upset because she felt betrayed but maybe she doesn't want to put Tom through the pain she felt so she hasn't told him about Gatsby.
ReplyDeleteCarlos
ReplyDeleteBut Daisy could leave Tom completely and then Tom may chase after her because he still loves her then Myrtle won't get any attention making her want to break them up?
Why does Nick choose to tell us about Tom’s mistrust towards Gatsby instead of Gatsby’s affair? Is he foreshadowing something, if so, what?
ReplyDeleteKevin, No that wont happen. Tom is rich so Daisy will stay with him. And Myrtle is not a rich woman. If she had the chance to get a rich lifestyle like she has now with Tom, she will not break up with him. She needs his money other wise she'll just be the wife of a machanich.
ReplyDeleteLaura
ReplyDeleteMaybe Jordan is losing interest in Nick but i think they will stay together for a while because they have fun together and even though Nick is not as fun as he was they still like to be together. Considering she wanted to be with him even though gatsby had more going on in his life.
Cortez-
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Daisy is trying to make Tom jealous in public to show that Tom is not the only one who has the power in the relationship.
I think that James Gatz changes his name to Jay Gatsby because James Gatz sounds like an honest working class man however Jay Gatsby rolls off the tongue it is smooth, sleek, and sly. Jay Gatsby has effortless presence and sounds like a powerful man.
ReplyDeleteKevin, if Tom wants to break them up then he has to pay for it by giving her money but if Myrtle is still in the picture then they could say that Tom was having the affair first which will cost him more of his fortune. But Jordan who is friends with all the characters tells Tom about the affair then Tom's affair will come up because Jordan will tell Myrtle who then will tell Tom
ReplyDeleteLaura-
ReplyDeleteI never thought that Jordan and Nick ever had a chance because Jordan doesn't seem to be the kind of person that would stick with one person for more than a month she seems so loose with her own morals that I never felt that they had a chance.
-Jacob
ReplyDeleteI think it is foreshadowing that Tom is going to do somthing bad to gatsby. He might be the one who shoots Gatsby at the end.
Green and white seem to be Daisys colors. it represents her once pure face (white) then her change to greed and want. (green)
ReplyDeleteJacob- I think that it is foreShadowing that in the end of the story, Tom is going to end up killing Gatsby because the conflict between them has gotten so bad.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think will happen in chapter 7?
ReplyDeletei think that Daisy's affair with Gatsby will be revealed, and her and Tom will split up.
Grace- I really like the way you worded that. Effortless presence. Fantastic. :D
ReplyDeleteI think that we see Toms feelings because throughout the book we haven't seen a good side of Tom necessarily so we see him get even deeper into this bad, angry person.
ReplyDeletenate- i think by daisey trying to make tom jealous in public might make tom start to realize that she is cheating on him with gatsby because she is trying to make him look better than tom
ReplyDeleteTyler- :) I think that the green card and the light defiantly have some similarities with eachother. THe green is representing Gatsby's envy of Tom and that every day Gatsby wishes he was with Daisy. If Gatsby ends up getting that kiss the envy might be over and the green light will turn off.

ReplyDeleteNate, I think that their affair will be revealed and Tom will threaten Gatsby in a public place to make him seem like a bad person but Gatsby will probably have some plan to make himself look better than Tom. Probably by announcing Tom's affair with Myrtle.
ReplyDeleteNate-
ReplyDeleteI could see Tom and Daisy falling apart and Daisy coming to Gatsby.
ReplyDeleteGatsby changes his name from James Gatz.
ReplyDeleteNate
ReplyDeleteI think that Tom will find out and confront Gatsby about it. But i think they will stay together because they are both having an affair
ReplyDeleteI think that Tom and the Sloanes have a problem with Gatsby because I think that Tom may feel that something is going on between Gatsby and Daisy.
ReplyDeleteI think Fitzgerald wrote the book based on how parts of life were like but he also added things that didnt happen in his real life to make the book not reflect really close to his life.
Cortez-
ReplyDeleteI think that your thoughts have been among the most thoughtful and educational ones ive seen on this blog today. Id encourage you to keep up the great work. Go Cortez!!!!!
Nate that is awesome bro, I have been inspired by your thoughts and woul like to offer you good luck on your Physics test.
ReplyDeleteNate
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cortez that you have very interesting comments but i disagree that Tom will find out. I think that there will be a huge build up of suspense and then it will happen in ch 8
Lee- I disagree with your comment because I think Tom has the leverage in the fight with Gatsby over Daisy. I think Gatsby might do something he will regret and end up losing Daisy and she will never forgive him.
ReplyDeleterumors keep circulating about gatsby and a reporter even travles there to intervies him. nick is kind of trying to relate to gatsbys story. gatsby worked as a janitor and hated his job as a kid he thinks it is humiliating but thats how he paid his tuition and then worked on a lake fishing and digging for clams. he saw a yacht and he rowed out to warn the people of a storm coming in. dan cody the owner of the yacht and copper mougle was very greatful to gatsby and enployed the young gatz. one of his jobs was to keep cody from drinking to much beacuse he was a heavy drinker witch convinced gatsby to not be a drinker. cody eventually died leaving gatsby an inheritance of 25000 dollars but codys mistress prevented gatsby from obtaining it. at that moment gatsby became commited to becomming a wealthy succesful man. nick dose not see gatsby or daisy for weeks after he had set up the reunion but he eventually went by gatsbys house one afternoon and finds tom there drinking witch makes gatsby very nervous and annoyed and tells tom that he knows daisy. gatsby invites tom and the sloans who were also there to stay for dinner but they say no instead they invite gatsby to dinner and he says yes. the next day daisy and to go to a party at gatsbys house, tom was not having fun and dislikes gatsby so tom trys to keep a close eye on daisy. nick and daisy both dont have a good time at this party and daisy feels as if tom is oppressing her.
ReplyDelete-Jacob
ReplyDeleteI think he is keeping some info from us to keep us interested and to save for later. he needs to keep his story going longer.
