Gothic Fishbowl: A Rose for Emily

This is our second-to-last fishbowl, my friends, so let's make it noteworthy.

Remember that you are using the blog and hotseating to show me that you have read and thought about the story. Each outer circle blog is equal to 10 points in the listening and discussing category.

Enjoy, and again, get yourself into a hotseat!

  3. why did Emily want to keep the bodies?

  4. kevin- I think she didnt want to give up the bodies because she feels so attached to them and they are the things she loves and she does not want to lose them.

  5. Why did Emily's father chase away all of the boys away?

  6. Cody- I think that the story is out of order because it adds to the reasoning behind why she has become crazy and is sleeping with a dead body.

  7. Willie, emily probably felt completely lonely so even if it was a dead body she wanted it cause she is crazy

  8. Brett maybe the servant thought that she could blame him, because who where they going to believe. Emily who is the woman of the house or the servant.

  9. Willie- I think she was just crazy and wanted to keep her dads body for herself. Just like Homers body that she wanted to keep and sleep next to all those years.

  10. Dakota- I think maybe her father chased away all the boys because he didnt want to lose emily to someone else. I think he wanted to always be with her and not have her gone with some boy.

  11. Kevin-
Well she wants to be have someone and she doesn't want to be alone. Plus burring someone at a grave is really expensive so maybe she is saving money up till then so she store's it on her bed so she won't lose the body

  12. Willie, Emily probably felt dependent on her dad and need him to get on with life.

  13. Carlos/Brett- to add on to what carlos said he is also a Negro so people would automatically think he was the one that killed him.

  14. Brett-
The servant doesn't want to tell anyone if she did she would lose the job and then couldn't pay for food for the 14 kids she probably has at home waiting for her or maybe the servant seen worse

  15. Hunter- She has the money cause her dad left all of his money to her so I dont think she kept him because of money.

  16. Kevin-
Of course Kevin it makes sense plus she's poor.

  17. I feal that it's her fathers fault that Emily was the way she was because. Her father drove away all her boy friends ,so the only way for her to keep Homer from leaving was to kill him.

  18. Willie- I agree with you because he also wasnt in to her so she had to kill him to keep him from leaving.

  19. willie-
but why did she keep her fathers body then?

  20. Dakota- I think that her dad just wanted to keep her safe and protected, he wanted to keep her unharmed and safe against men.

  21. Cody-
I know she does,I'm talking about the servant the servant doesn't have any money that's what I'm saying she won't tell any one she would lose the job

  22. Hunter- Oh okay now I see what your saying.

  23. did she think it would make him be by her forever if she killed hijm?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kevin- Maybe she felt that her dad was a protecting force for her and she didn't want to give up her safety net.

  25. Emily and her father had a special relationship, obviously her mother was not important in her life and so when she lost the one love in her life, she could not let it ge. I think this is the reason she went crazy and was clingy to her boyfriend. Why didnt her neighbors notice something was off earlier?

  26. dan it seams likly that ur idea is probably correct

    ReplyDelete
  27. Brooke- I don't think Emily socialized with her neighbors so that's why her neighbors didn't think anything was off earlier.

  28. Was there something more deep rooted about her death? Why didnt she just kill herself after Homer and her father died if she wanted to be with them?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cortez- Why was she so dependant oh staying with homer? Even afer she killed him?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Brett. I think she lived a long happy life with her dead boy friend.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Andy- Probably because she was lonely and she loved him. She just wanted to be with him. She couldn't go on with out him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Andy- She wants to stay with him because she is still attached to him and like cortez said she can't go on without him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dakota- Her dad just wanted to keep her safe and didn't want to loose her to anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Willie- she did not want to get rid of her fathers body because, her father was a main part of her life and she can't think of life without him.

  35. I thought this story was very interesting and something more then just a good ghost story. I think that Emily represents us wanting to get rid of things, but not wanting to fully commit to it. Its kind of like when you get rid of a book, but tear out your favorite page for the memories. You got rid of the bad stuff and kept the good thing. I think that she didn't love Homer as a person, but loved to own him... she had full power over him by killing him and she is satisfied with sleeping with him while he is dead. he cant talk or run. He's stuck under her power and she is fully satisfied with the little piece of him that she has, and wont give away.

  36. In "A Rose for Emily," Emily does things that to others appear sick but perhaps it was merely a representation of holding onto things we can't accept. She kept the bodies of her father and her lover and that action is seen as dangerously unstable. Emily was showing the true human feeling of not accepting facts or events that hurt us. Maybe she didn't want to let go of her father because in her mind she could pretend like he was still alive. Though her actions weren't correct, it shows that almost everyone has this same fault of having trouble letting go. One thing I did not understand though was that the story hinted at the fact that she may have killed her lover. Why would she kill him if she had such trouble losing people she cared about? Maybe he wanted to leave her and she thought it was the only way to keep him.

  37. I believe that in A rose for Emily it just shows peoples attachement to others, that love might just be able to extend past the grave, given it's creepy she still has the bodies. Do you think that staying inside protected her or hurt her? cause I think she created her own world that helped her be safe but the way of living was strange and foreign to the people on the outside
