Gothic Fishbowl: The Lottery

Keep up your strong work, outer circle. Two suggestions:

1. Remember to bring in at least one textual passage.
2. Get yourself into a hot seat!

Enjoy!

  1. I think that the box in the lottery represents how everybody's time of death is unknown.

  2. Okay so I'm a little confused about the whole ending so they were drawling for the lottery and the winner got stone's throwing at them so does that mean winner loses or do these people like the feeling of get stone's throwing at them? plus why were the men keep saying it use to not be this way they were getting really annoying?

  3. Why did the one man ssy that other towns getting rid of the lottery was a bad idea?

  4. why would they choose stonning as the way to kill someone?

  5. Why would they do this to control population?

  6. So by winning the lottery you die???

  7. What made the kids stone her? why that way of death?

  8. why did they have the need to kill people?

  9. I am still confused why they need to kill someone and they choose a lottery to pick someone, why cant they chhose a person who broke a law or did something wrong.

  10. Did the Author control our emotions in the story by only making us feel a certain way.

  11. I think we should stone whoever has the lowest grade in this class.

  12. have you ever thought that stone's are money in that town and you know how people throw money on people(make it rain) that they were throwing pebbles on her making it hail

  13. Nate i don't think that it was about population control because they preferred that an adult male would get stoned because Mr. Summers asked if she had a male to pick for her.

  14. Cortez: i think the Author can control our emotions easily epecially in a gothic story that is wierd or creepy

  15. why do they call it a lottery even though its negative? When most people think of the word lottery, there is a positvie interpretation.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I still don't understand why they kill people like this. why choose someone to randomly kill?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It shows how people only care about themself ,and they would rather have someone else die rather than rather than themself.

  18. carlos, why would they want men to die more though?

    ReplyDelete
  19. and why do they respect and uphold the tradition of the lottery?

  20. Brett- Maybe it's their religion that its up to chance, who gets stoned. That maybe it's god that chooses for you and hands you a paper that makes you get stoned to death for something that you could have done.

  21. Everyone-

Do you think that since the lottery is represented in most societies as impossible to win that the author uses the lottery as a metaphore for when someone wins the lottery they die inside.

Would you rather get hit by a bus think about it I would rather die a winner then like bugging jumping and turns out the bungee cord isn't tied up to your legs

  23. I like what Grace said about the satirization of rituals because this ritual and many others in the real world dont make any sense

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kevin, I don't know why they would want men to die, maybe it's because they are the heads of the household and that they are responsible for what members of their families have done or maybe it's something else.

  25. Could the black box be like the arc of the covinant?

    ReplyDelete
  26. davis-
i think that is true because most people who win the lottery in our society lose themselves in the money and end up losing everything they own.

    ReplyDelete
  27. moemoney: i think that it could destroy a person inside winning the lotterie because all the money could give them too much power

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think they trust that fate will chose who doesn't deserve to live so the chances prove right and they are wiling to follow through.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cortez- I feel liek they do control our emotions and ake us feel what is right and wrong.

  30. to hunter-
but this is random murder, getting hit by a bus or bungee jumping death would be an accident. why do they just randomly kill people?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Kevin and Carlos;
well if they kill men they can't pass on their traits plus the women want them dead for sitting around playing COD all day and only speak to them about them bringing them sandwich's pathetic

  32. I like how the inner circle connected the lottery box with the monsters in The Village. Both instiled a sense of fear within the townspeople.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Dakota M about the box choosing who doesn't deserves to live, and if it's about tradition then how much development has happened in this society.

    ReplyDelete
  34. can the box really be rigged? Is it religious or cultural? It is a once a year ritual, for being negative, people did not sound too nervous.

    ReplyDelete
  35. seanf and hunter
getting hit buy a bus may not be an accident though and what if the guy tying the bungee cord didnt tie it on purpose?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like the idea that it is once a year but the meaning of the ritual could have been misconstrued from the real meaninig.

    ReplyDelete
  37. brooke-
i think the lottery could be rigged because the lady that showed up late ended up dying

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think Halloween has lost its meaning because there is no reason why we dress up in costumes and get candy

    ReplyDelete
  39. -kevin
well, thats called suicide. thats his choice.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Brooke,
Maybe the box is rigged who knows but Mr.Summers
    Sean:
But so is the box you can pick the wrong paper on accident

    ReplyDelete
  41. Cortez- Even in the story they said that many parts to The Lottery where forgotten but how could they know that it means that the winner gets stoned and not something else.

  42. this story wrecks the loyalty between the town and in between each family. It is a ritual that has completely lost its purpose. It allows them to turn against eachother, even within a family. Since it is a small town, it is suprising how they know everyones elses lives and they are willing to give it up like that.

  43. I dont think christmas has lost its meaning because poeple still know the reason why its a holiday and why we celebrate

    ReplyDelete
  44. are all traditions in society for good reasons or is there stuff that is a tradition celebrating something bad?
